How do I choose effective sun protective clothes?

Descente Singapore October 2, 2014 NEWS

Any clothing can be considered sun-protective if it covers the skin, and pieces in darker colors, tighter weaves and synthetic fabrics are all better at blocking harmful rays than lighter, loosely woven clothes of natural fibers, said Dr. Joshua Zeichner, an educational spokesman for The Skin Cancer Foundation.

But clothes with a UPF rating are specially designed to give more protection against harmful ultraviolet rays. UPF ratings range from 15 to 50-plus, with higher numbers indicating more protection. Clothes made from fabrics with ratings higher than 50 are labelled as UPF 50+.

Typically, the longer you need to stay under the sun, the higher UPF rating clothes you need. Every UPF 1 rating allows you to stay under the sun for an additional 5 minutes. For example, clothes with UPF 15 gives you sun protection for 75 minutes before the ultraviolet rays take a toll on your skin.

**Every UPF 1 = 5 minutes under the sun

With this simple calculation, you can now easily choose sun protective clothes that cater to your needs.
